Plattsburgh Municipal Beach Reopens Following Vandalism Incidents and  Maintenance

For Immediate ReleaseOctober 1, 2025      Plattsburgh, New York      518-563-7701    Plattsburgh Municipal Beach Reopens Following Vandalism Incidents and  Maintenance The City of Plattsburgh is pleased to announce the reopening of the City of Plattsburgh Beach effective September 30, 2025, following a temporary closure due to acts of vandalism, dumping of garbage and scheduled maintenance. We want to sincerely apologize to our community members, beachgoers, and visitors for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected closure. The decision to close the beach was not taken lightly, but it was necessary to ensure public safety and to allow time for proper assessment and repairs. While closed the Department of Public Works removed a few dangerous trees and paved a section of the boardwalk. We have taken many security steps to ensure the responsible wrong doers are held responsible. The beach gates will open at approximately 7:30 am and will be closed at dusk each day. New security cameras have been installed and as always no swimming is allowed when lifeguards are not present. We are grateful for the patience and understanding shown by the public during this time. Our community’s support and cooperation allowed us to make necessary improvements and open the beach quickly and responsibly. We kindly ask all visitors to remain vigilant and respectful of shared public spaces. If you see any suspicious activity, please report it to the Plattsburgh City Police. Protecting our local amenities is a shared responsibility, and together we can help prevent future incidents. Mayor Wendell Hughes

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATERTotal Trihalomethanes (TTHM) MCL Violation atTHE CITY OF PLATTSBURGH Water Filtration PlantOur water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this incident was not an emergency, asour customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did (are doing) to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results from 06 May 2025 show thatour system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for TTHM. The standard For TTHM is 80.0mcg/L. It is determined by averaging all the samples collected at each sampling location for the past 12 months. Thelevel of TTHM averaged at one of our system's locations 20 August 2024- 06 May 2025 was 85.9 mcg/L.   What should I do?• There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. If asituation arises where the water is no longer safe to drink, you will be notified within 24 hours.• If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may beat increased risk and should seek advice from your healthcare providers about drinking this water. What does this mean? This is not an emergency. If it had been an emergency, you would have been notified within 24 hours.TTHM are four volatile organic chemicals which form when disinfectants react with natural organic matter in thewater.People who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer. What is being done? The city of Plattsburgh WFP has recently begun (after these test results) blending water sources. Approximately 45%of the drinking water is now coming from our new well. We will be adding more wells to our water system in the nearfuture. Increasing the percentage of water being used form wells. This should reduce the organic precursors in thewater thus lowering the TTHMs. We anticipate resolving the problem within 3 months or sooner. Our mission is toprovide you with the highest quality water possible.
